he MacBook Air doesn’t change much from year to year. Same flat design, same keyboard, same screen size. So when Apple announced the M5 version in March 2026, the first question most people asked was simple: is this just a chip bump, or is there a real reason to buy it?
After going through the spec sheet, the test results from reviewers and the current Indian pricing, my answer is: there’s more here than it looks. But the price story in India has become a bit messy, so read the pricing section before you click “Buy Now”.
The model we’re talking about is the 13.6-inch MacBook Air with M5, 16GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, in Starlight.

What’s Actually New This Year
If you own an M4 Air, you can stop reading here. Keep your laptop. It’s fine.
If you’re coming from an Intel Mac, an M1, or a Windows laptop, here’s what the M5 version brings:
1. 512GB is now the starting storage. This is the biggest practical change. For years, the base Air came with 256GB, which fills up surprisingly fast once you add photos, WhatsApp backups and a few apps. Now you don’t have to pay extra just to get breathing room.
2. The SSD is roughly twice as fast. Macworld measured around 6GB/s, up from about 3GB/s on older models. You’ll notice it when copying large video files or opening heavy projects. For everyday browsing, not so much.
3. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple uses its own N1 wireless chip here. Most Indian homes aren’t on Wi-Fi 7 routers yet, so this is more about the laptop lasting you five or six years than about today.
4. Faster AI processing. Apple says AI tasks run up to four times faster than the previous generation. More on this below.
Performance: How Fast Is It Really?
For the kind of work most people do on an Air (Chrome with 20 tabs, Google Docs, Zoom calls, Excel sheets, some Canva, Netflix at night) the M5 doesn’t even break a sweat. You won’t hear anything either, because there’s no fan. None at all.
That silence has a trade-off though. Since there’s no fan, the chip slows itself down when it gets hot during long, heavy tasks. Macworld noticed game frame rates dropping after about 10 minutes. The same goes for long 4K video exports.
So here’s the honest version:
- Students, writers, office work, coding, photo editing: more power than you’ll use.
- Occasional video editing (YouTube, reels): handles it well. Long exports will be a bit slower than on a MacBook Pro.
- Serious gaming or daily heavy video work: look at the MacBook Pro instead. The Air isn’t built for hours of full load.
The 16GB RAM is the sweet spot. It’s enough to keep many apps open at once without the laptop slowing down, and it’s also what Apple Intelligence needs to run properly.
Apple Intelligence and AI Features
This is where the marketing gets loud, so let’s keep it grounded.
The M5 has a 16-core Neural Engine and neural accelerators built into the GPU. In plain words, it can run AI features directly on the laptop instead of sending your data to a server. That’s good for speed and for privacy.
What you’ll actually use day to day:
- Writing Tools: rewrite, proofread or summarise text in almost any app. Handy for emails and long documents.
- Notification and email summaries: useful when you come back to 40 unread messages.
- Clean Up in Photos: remove random people or objects from your pictures.
- Smarter Siri: better than before, still not perfect.
If you use local AI tools or run small language models for work, the extra memory bandwidth and faster Neural Engine make a real difference. For most buyers, though, AI is a nice bonus, not the main reason to buy.
Display
The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina screen is sharp and colours look accurate. 500 nits of brightness is enough for indoor use and fine near a window. Under direct afternoon sun on a balcony, you’ll struggle a little, like with most laptops.
Two things are missing that you might care about:
- No 120Hz ProMotion. Scrolling is smooth enough, but it’s still 60Hz.
- No HDR. Movies look good, not spectacular.
If you’re coming from a budget Windows laptop with a dim 250-nit panel, you’ll still find this screen a big step up.
Battery Life
This is the Air’s strongest point, and the M5 keeps it that way.
Apple claims up to 18 hours of video playback. Macworld’s own test hit 18 hours and 24 minutes, which is rare. Usually real-world numbers come in well below the company’s claim.
In practical terms: you can take it to college or office in the morning, leave the charger at home, and still have charge left by evening. For long train journeys or flights, it’s one of the best laptops you can carry.
The box includes a 40W adapter. If you have a 70W or higher USB-C charger, you get fast charging.
Camera, Speakers and Everything Else
Camera: The 12MP Center Stage camera keeps you in the frame even if you move around during a call. Desk View shows what’s on your desk from above, which teachers and tutors will like. Video calls look clearly better than on most Windows laptops at this price.
Speakers: Four speakers with Spatial Audio. Surprisingly full for a laptop this thin. Fine for YouTube and movies without earphones.
Keyboard and trackpad: Still among the best on any laptop. Touch ID in the power key makes logging in and approving payments quick.
Ports: Two USB-C, MagSafe and a headphone jack. No HDMI, no USB-A, no SD card slot. Budget a few hundred rupees for a USB-C hub if you use pen drives or connect to projectors.
Weight: 1.23 kg. Easy to carry all day in a backpack.
What I Didn’t Like
- Design hasn’t changed in about four years. It still looks great, but if you wanted something fresh, this isn’t it.
- Only two USB-C ports, both on the same side.
- No 120Hz screen at this price, when many Windows laptops offer it.
- Throttles under long heavy loads because of the fanless design.
- The Indian price has gone up (see below).
Price in India: Read This Before Buying
This part matters.
When the M5 Air launched in India in March 2026, the 13-inch model started at Rs 1,19,900. Then in June 2026, Apple raised prices of MacBooks in India because memory chips became much more expensive globally. The same 13-inch M5 Air now has an MRP of Rs 1,49,900, a jump of Rs 30,000.
The good news: retailers have started discounting it again. Some stores have been selling it close to Rs 1,39,000, and with selected credit card offers the effective price can drop further.
So my advice:
- Don’t pay full MRP. Check the current Amazon price and bank offers.
- Watch for sale events. Big festive sales usually bring the best deals on MacBooks.
- Check exchange offers if you have an old laptop lying around.
